Industry Standard by Lori Glavin Oil on Paper 20" x 17 1/2" Today is the opening preview of Lori Glavin's two-person show with fellow artist Sam Weiner, called "Color and Line: On and Off The Wall, at the University of Connecticut, Stamford Art Gallery, Washington Boulevard, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The exhibition runs through Wednesday, November 23, 2011. I'll concentrate on Lori's work for this story, mainly because as an arts writer, I've followed her original, evocative work since the 1980's and have witnessed her prolific outpouring and exploration. Painter, printmaker and collage artist, Lori Glavin has been deeply involved with the art world and the visual arts for over 25 years. Not afraid of new techniques and new ideas, in her own words, she "accumulates and re-interprets the artifacts of daily life. Embracing the relationship between domesticity and art-making, I seek to find a second use for found objects of personal significance -- whether my grandmother's lace doilies, supermarket packaging or househouse textiles." In a recent statement, Lori writes, "My inspiration flows from the demands and joys of the specific project combined with my memories and daily experiences. Spontaneous, intuitive, reactive and immediate, I begin my paintings and prints with a pile of raw experiences and a string of unstructured, but related thoughts." As the artist has worked in a variety of art and design forms, including art director and graphic designer, she fears neither color nor line. She states, "Working on several pieces at once, I react to energizing color combinations and explore the potential of new materials. An ordered chaos of imagery emerges as my process unfolds. Each piece reflects the frenetic pace and diversity of contemporary life that is at once, overwhelming and exhilarating."

I've interviewed a fascinating range of fine artists over the years in many publications such as Art and Antiques, Time-Mirror Newspapers and Art Scene for the Hour. My mission here is to bring the work of gifted artists to the public eye and do it with accuracy, writing excellence, a bit of humor and artistic insight.
